Swing Left Campus Leaders Toolkit

Campus groups are fundamental to Swing Left in growing grassroots power. As a Swing Left campus leader, you’re organizing your peers to build lasting infrastructure, empower your community, and win elections together.

This toolkit is a free library of resources, services, and trainings. From slides for meetings to canvass trainings, advice on empowering new leadership to graphics for Instagram, we’re here to support you. We invite you to get in touch anytime by scheduling a one-on-one conversation with your Swing Left staff contact. For questions and time-sensitive support, please email our Grassroots Support Team at host@swingleft.org.

Current priorities

  • Host a 'Listen to Win' empathetic listening training!‍ ‍ Post your event on Mobilize and check out this host guide (which includes slides and pre-recorded videos) to get started with planning.

  • Host your first 2026 Ground Truth canvasses:Post your event on Mobilize now for events taking place anytime January 24 onward. We’ll provide you with trainings, materials, and everything you need for a successful canvass in a Swing Left target district. Let your contact know if you need help selecting a location or want to talk through the host process.

  • Relational canvassing continues: Swing Left is supporting early canvassing with a new-and-improved relational twist. Review the options for using our relational postcard to build a long-term two-way conversation with volunteers and voters – no matter where you're located. Be sure to order the (free!) postcards at least 10 days in advance.

Your intro to Swing Left

Swing Left’s mission is simple: Make it easy for people to maximize their impact on the most competitive elections to help Democrats win majorities at the state and federal level. Whereas campaign organizing re-starts and ends cycle after cycle, Swing Left is committed to long-term, year-round organizing to build sustainable grassroots groups to coordinate with campaigns, state parties, and partners to make sure we’re not duplicating our efforts.

We know that winning the House puts a real check on Trump’s power, so our eyes are on the 2026 midterms. Our strategy targets House districts with razor-thin margins, helping groups funnel volunteers and money where it’s needed more. Where Swing Left invests time and money, Democrats perform better.

On campus, our Swing Left affiliated groups are busy year round: recruiting volunteers, registering voters, hosting phonebank parties, and even heading to target districts to knock doors. We love the creativity and spin our campus leaders bring to their organizing, from showing up at campus-specific events to working on local issues your communities are impacted by.

Being part of our Swing Left community, you have access to a library of resources, trainings, connections to campaigns, and event templates to use at your leisure. Our organizers are also here to chat, brainstorm, and provide one-on-one support to help you accomplish your goals on campus and beyond.

Onboarding: Get started as a Swing Left campus leader

Want to organize your college campus? Looking to plug your existing club into a national network or build a group from the ground up? Wherever you are on your campus organizing journey, Swing Left is here to support you. Our hundreds of college groups differ from campus to campus: some focus on educational programming with others on voter registration, some host canvasses while others phonebank. Some groups adopt the Swing Left name, and others simply use us as a behind-the-scenes network. Schedule a one-on-one meeting with our staff and we’ll walk you through every step of the process of creating or registering a Swing Left group!

Make the most of Swing Left’s digital volunteer management tools

As a Swing Left group, you have the option to take advantage of Group Builder: your personalizable website, member management tool, fundraising page, and more! Some campus groups opt out of group builder for other, college-specific platforms. However, here are some Group Builder tips if you chose to:

  • Group Builder Guide | Tips for using Group Builder

    • Update your group’s page with current information and fill out each section so that your page is attractive to new members and a valuable resource for existing members.

    • Use the email functions to welcome new volunteers and communicate with your members. Customize the welcome email on the "Email members" page; when someone new joins your group, reach out directly and start to develop a relationship!

    • Set up all of your events on Mobilize through your Group Builder page by clicking "Create an event" (or, make sure you’re using your same email address when going through Mobilize). This will help you increase turnout, keep track of volunteers’ attendance and contact information, and measure your impact. If a volunteer signs up for one of your events and they're not already registered with your group, they'll automatically be added!

Hosting voter contact events is also a great way to recruit new group members. Check out the section below for details!

Host and manage events

As a group leader, a big part of your role is hosting organizing events and voter contact events at different points in the election cycle. Here are our resources for organizing each kind of event, including a host guide with helpful tips.

Host an organizing event

Organize a capacity-building event, including trainings, planning sessions, general interest meetings after the club fair, etc.

Host a phone bank

Calling voters is an important way to help get voters to turn out on Election Day. We'll connect you with a campaign to set it up.

Host a friend bank

Bring folks together to reach out to their networks and ask them to take action. (Pro tip: the best friend banks include pizza!)

Host a letter writing party

Motivate voters in target states by sending them personalized letters through Swing Left's affiliate, Vote Forward.

Host a high-traffic canvass

Show up in the center of campus or head to a busy area in a target district to recruit volunteers and register voters!

Host a letter writing party

Motivate voters in target states by sending them personalized letters through Swing Left's affiliate, Vote Forward.

Host a canvass carpool or meetup

We’ll connect you directly with a target campaign to knock doors and help you organize transportation

Mobilize guide: You might already have a preferred way of promoting an event. We welcome you to take advantage of Mobilize if you so chose! Here are tips on how to set up events on Mobilize. The Swing Left team is here you make your event a success; don’t hesitate to reach out to host@swingleft.org for support!

  • Note for virtual events: When filling out your new event, if you choose a “virtual” event under Location, please also list a city, state, and zip code (full address not required), because that helps our website continue to show events to volunteers in your area. If you include a full address for an event you've indicated is "virtual," Mobilize will automatically hide your street address and only show the city, state and zip.

Press, social media an design/photography

As a group leader, you play a big role in telling the story of Swing Left. Here are some resources to help amplify your work:

Fundraise with your group

Swing Left can help your group raise money for candidates, or even for some of your group’s activities. Don’t know where to start? Think about who in college students’ networks have funds to spare and what college students generally spend on. Consider hosting a text bank to fundraise from non-student family and friends, or a campus social event like trivia, karaoke, or a potluck with a suggested donation! Schedule a meeting with your contact to hear about options and how it works.‍ ‍

Swing Left values & community agreements

Our Community Agreements guide all the work we do as a national organization, in our local groups, and one-on-one with each other as volunteers and activists. Thank you for reviewing these agreements and incorporating them into your work!
‍ ‍

Swing Left Community Agreements

Our goal is to create and foster a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for our volunteers and greater Swing Left community. These guidelines help us hold ourselves and each other accountable to ensure that together, we build the best community that supports our work and our mission.

  • Organize to elect Democrats. We focus on flipping seats from red to blue and winning Democratic majorities to help bring about progressive change. We organize and fundraise year-round to give eventual Democratic nominees critical support in their general election campaigns.

  • Focus on inclusivity and respect. We work to show respect and inclusivity in our actions and organizing. Both in-person and online, we use welcoming and inclusive language, model empathy, and empower each other to do our best work. We speak up, hold ourselves accountable, and work to address racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, transphobia, ableism, ageism, and all forms of discrimination.

  • Build a sustainable and strong progressive movement. We work within the progressive movement to create change and fight injustice. We support partners and allied groups whenever possible.

  • Approach our work with humility. We are all learning, and we follow the lead set by local leaders and communities. We openly accept feedback, and proactively work to unlearn our own biases and assumptions.

  • Respect each other’s time and resources. As an organization, Swing Left helps volunteers find the most impactful actions to take to help Democrats win the most important elections.

Please report examples of abusive behavior, harassment, or other unacceptable conduct to community@swingleft.org, and a member of our staff will review and respond promptly.

Anti-Racism Action Hub

Electing Democrats alone is an important but clearly insufficient step towards achieving the progressive change needed to create a more inclusive and equitable government and society. We encourage all of our volunteers to consider how you can elevate anti-racism work and show up for communities of color side by side with your electoral work.

You can start by reviewing our Anti-Racism Action Hub for ideas.
